New park on Coutts Island Road
We're planning on developing 10 hectares of land on Coutts Island Road into a new parkland area. The land was previously a gravel storage area and is located alongside the Waimakariri River, approximately 2 kilometres upstream from the SH1 Bridge.
Additional considerations and site information:
- The site is in a flood plain, therefore minimal infrastructure for the park is recommended (buildings, electricity, water pipes or sewer pipes)
- River access from the park is via foot only, due to the stopbank
- Any development must enhance biodiversity
- Flood protection infrastructure will be prioritised as part of park planning.
Timeline update
We are currently working through access options for the Coutts Island site. Once we have worked through these options, we plan to share an updated concept plan in 2023. We have updated the timeline on the right hand side of this page to reflect this change.
