The Waimakariri Water Zone Committee is developing recommendations in the Waimakariri draft Zone Implementation Programme on how to improve water quality and supply in the Waimakariri zone.

The Waimakariri Zone Implementation Programme Addendum (ZIPA) sets the direction for land and water management in the zone and includes some challenging but achievable targets to deliver the community’s future goals for water.

How you can play your part

The committee sought feedback from the communities on the draft recommendations before they go to councils later in the year to help inform their regional and district plans.

The recommendations cover:

  • Setting water quality and quantity limits
  • How to address over allocation
  • Managing nitrates
  • Protecting drinking water quality
  • Enhancing the natural environment and mahinga kai values
  • Developing priority areas to manage runoff and nitrates from land
  • The use of Farm and Lifestyle Block Environment Plans
  • Raising awareness and inspiring action
  • Monitoring, trialling and encouraging innovation is essential along with an ability to adapt to new information

The zone committee welcomes your feedback on these recommendations and it will be taken into account before the draft ZIPA is finalised.
