  • What are the chances of adding Ashburton into the commuter train services that are proposed between Rolleston, ChCh and Rangiora? We have quite a number of people who commute from ChCh to Ashburton for work and also many who go from Ashburton to ChCh. A good commuter service would be a good climate adaptation and apart from that a very good service to the community. We have a number of people who have to access medical appointments and other services in Ch Ch and they would definitely use the service too. Will you listen???

Kia ora and thank you for your question. Rail has been a live topic in the media recently and your comments about Ashburton to/from Christchurch are noted. While standing up a commuter rail service between districts isn’t something that is on any immediate workplan for public transport, the Canterbury Regional Transport Committee has asked for a review of intra-regional public transport options, with a potential focus on investigations into rail. This won’t start until 2027 though, due to the other commitments made for the public transport service and limited funding. The review requested by the CRTC is for a market demand study and rail utilisation study as part of thinking around intra-regional public transport options, alongside freight movement in and out of the region.

As you’ll be aware, KiwiRail run the rail infrastructure, so any passenger rail plans would need to be reviewed by them alongside other uses of their infrastructure, as well as considerations of how it would be funded.
