Reporting our progress to the community

We want to understand your expectations about reporting and how we can show that we are delivering on the areas we are responsible for.

As the regional council for Waitaha/Canterbury, we are responsible for managing natural resources including air, soil, water and land.

Our Long-Term Plan 2024-34 outlines our activities and budget for the next 10 years. It shows how we plan to deliver on community priorities and address key issues affecting the region. The Long-Term Plan impacts everyone who lives and works in Waitaha.

Our responsibilities include:

  • Setting the regulatory framework
  • Providing authorisations (consents) and ensuring compliance in line with the framework

  • Responding to pollution events

  • Leading collective efforts to prevent, reduce or eliminate pests

  • Partnering to protect and enhance indigenous biodiversity and mahinga kai

  • Collecting and sharing high quality data, information and advice

  • Providing resources to support local action

  • Building and maintaining flood and river resilience

  • Providing a flood warning and advisory service

  • Providing data and information on contaminated land and natural hazards

  • Enabling Civil Defence and Emergency Management support and leadership

  • Regulating and promoting navigation safety in ports, harbours, rivers and lakes

  • Providing bus and ferry services

  • Providing Total Mobility funding and support for Community Vehicle Trusts.
