Our future, Canterbury

Waitaha/Canterbury is a special place in many ways. It has some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes, precious ecosystems and taonga species, and is home to the communities we live in and care about.

Environment Canterbury is responsible for helping support the wellbeing of our region by delivering environmental management, public transport services, and helping build community resilience.

We have a number of plans to update, to meet the current and future expectations of mana whenua, community, and the government. This includes the Canterbury Regional Policy Statement, a powerful tool that sets the direction for all other district and regional plans, and a climate action plan to build resilience to climate change risks in Waitaha/Canterbury.

Thank you for your feedback

Through July and August we asked you to tell us what we should prioritise by sharing your vision for freshwater and the outcomes we need to work towards achieving together, for our communities’ wellbeing and the environment. We received a lot of feedback. View the final Our Future, Canterbury Report July - August 2023 (PDF 3.4MB)

Let's pick a path, our future Canterbury

We are now asking you to share your views on our draft visions, outcomes and goals, and help us consider actions to enable those to be met. Visit our Let's Pick a Path consultation page.

There are key issues we are trying to address including climate change; the quality of water in our rivers, lakes and wetlands, biodiversity and building resilience to natural hazards.

Our environment needs urgent action in some areas and greater protection in others. This requires a step change in the way some key areas are cared for and managed.
